Analyse and comment on the success Essay
Analyse and comment on the success of the title sequence of Baz Luhrmannââ¬â¢s 1997 film adaptation of ââ¬ËRomeo & Julietââ¬â¢Ã The 1997 adaptation of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Romeo and Juliet by Baz Luhrmann was attempting to reach out to a younger audience by modernising the old play with new ideas, even though the old text was kept. Set in modern times with modern things that a young audience could relate to, Luhrmann successfully hauled Shakespeareââ¬â¢s text from 16th century Verona, Italy to late 20th century Miami, USA. The purpose of this essay is to review, analyse and comment on the use of Luhrmannââ¬â¢s background to help him in making the movie, the success of the film but most importantly the cinematic success of the title scene. The location was specifically chosen to represent modern times. America was the most modern country available. Although Luhrmann wanted to shoot the film in Miami, it was seen by the mayor of Miami as unrealistic to put the city on hold while they shot the movie; Mexicoââ¬â¢s capital city, Mexico City was used instead. It had everything the crew needed, it had a typical city milieu; it was perfect. As the movie was going to be originally set in Miami, the characters had to at least look like they were from Miami. The Montague household wore very casual Hawaiian t-shirts, which were not buttoned up but hung loosely on the wearer. The Capulets wore very serious, cool clothes, mostly dark colours like black and grey. The choices of clothes used were to symbolise gangsters and mob mentality. ââ¬Ëfrom ancient grudge break to new mutinyââ¬â¢ were being portrayed by Luhrmann, as two rival gangs. Casting was very much a big thing in Luhrmannââ¬â¢s version. He had to pick actors that young people could relate to. It was hard finding such actors, as the young and popular ones had problems reading Shakespeareââ¬â¢s diverse and complicated old English text. Luhrmann knew that Leonardo Di Caprio would be perfect for Romeo, as he was a heartthrob worldwide, and would bring in the young girls, who adored him. Throughout the movie we are shown images of power. These images are more abundant in the opening title scene. Images of guns, violence and police are shown to create an atmosphere of chaos and anarchy. The guns are used, again to create a modernised version of the old play. The guns represent the swords used by the people in the sixteenth century, and they are referred to as swords by the actors, ââ¬Ëput up thy swords.ââ¬â¢ Religion is one of the main themes in the play, and Luhrmann uses many powerful images to show this in the opening title scene. Two statues of Jesus are filmed round about either side of the city. The statues are opposite each other with their faces facing inwards, as if looking over the people of ââ¬ËVeronaââ¬â¢ and keeping guard. Also the Christian crucifix is used to replace some of the Ts in the scripture which occasionally flash between the montage of images of police, violent riots and arrests; the scripture is repeating the important parts of the sonnet that opens the play. Cinematography is used to great effect in the opening scene. Zooming and panning left and right all help to create the effect of disorder and chaos. Before the title of the movie is actually shown there is a montage of images; each clip lasts only for a split second. Each clip is taken from the movie to show the audience that it isnââ¬â¢t an old fashioned soppy love story, but a violent, tragic blockbuster. Using the scenes of gun fights and violence the montage really creates an adrenalin rush. The music and the backing track for the title scene really goes with the visual picture on the screen. Fast tempo gets the blood pumping and again it helps to cause chaos. It has real power as it builds up towards the end of the title scene; during the montage of images it speeds up and the power of it envelops you. Then finally we see the title of the movie and the music stops after a few seconds after the title falls into view and the audience is left in silence. In conclusion, considering all the areas of the title scene, Baz Luhrmann has successfully given birth to a fantastic opening to Romeo and Juliet. The title scene underlines key aspects of the sonnet which opens the play, to help the people in the audience who donââ¬â¢t understand Shakespeare and even the ones who do. He introduces the principle characters, again to stop the audience from getting confused. The use of exciting images, such as the gun and the images of police and violence makes certain people in the audience stay and not walk out because they may believe it to be boring; many teenagers would believe Shakespeare to be boring. The opening scene had a very strong effect on me personally. It really made me want to see the movie again, even though I had already seen it about three times. The scene gripped me and not many title scenes have done that to me. Baz Luhrmannââ¬â¢s version of Romeo and Juliet was a complete success.

Environment Science Individual Group Project Portion Essay
Environment Science Individual Group Project Portion - Essay Example The human suffering that resulted from the ââ¬ËIrish Potato Famineââ¬â¢ of 1846 to 1850 occurred predominantly due to the Irish poor being reliant solely on one crop, the potato, for sustenance. Prior to the 1800ââ¬â¢s, the Irish grew barley, rye, oats and vegetables, but the 1804 Corn Law of Britain, a tariff imposed on imported grains to safeguard the profit margin of British landowners, changed this. Grains were no longer a viable crop for Irish to produce but potatoes still were. The majority of Irish landowners, the employers of most of the working poor, converted to potato farming. Generally, the poor were paid in potatoes during this hard economic period. Millions trusted their fate to the health of the potato and the stage was set for this calamitous event. In addition, the Irish population had spiked 50 percent in the two decades prior to the famine in the regions that were hit the hardest (Japikse, 1994). In 1846, The Irish climate became wetter and warmer than usual which was conducive for the proliferation the fungus that ultimately destroyed the potato crop. The weather did not cause the fungus but acted to further its progress. The fungus, Phytophthora infestans, arrived in Ireland from Europe the year before and during a more normal weather pattern would have not produced a similar devastating outcome. ââ¬Å"The spores of the blight were carried by wind, rain and insects and came to Ireland from Britain and the European continent. A fungus affected the potato plants, producing black spots and a white mould on the leaves, soon rotting the potato into a pulpâ⬠(Ranelagh, 1994, p.111). The 1846 potato crop perished and though potatoes can be easily stored for up to a year by simply being left in the ground, they cannot be sustained any longer therefore no surplus was stored for anytime later than 1847. The poor had food for the

The role of slavery in secession Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The role of slavery in secession - Essay Example Indeed, even before the war was over, researchers in the North and South started to investigate and decipher the explanations for the carnage. The Secession of Southern States prompted the foundation of the Confederacy and at last the Civil War. It was the most genuine Secession development in the United States and was vanquished when the Union armed forces crushed the Confederate armed forces in the Civil War. Before the Civil War, the nation was separating in the middle of North and South. Issues included States Rights and contradictions over taxes yet the best partition was on the issue of subjugation, which was lawful in the South yet had bit by bit been banned by states north of the Mason-Dixon Line. As the US obtained new regions in the west, astringent open deliberations ejected about whether or not subjugation would be allowed in those domains. Southerners dreaded it was just a matter of time before the expansion of new non-slaveholding states however no new slaveholding states would give control of the administration to abolitionists, and the organization of subjection would be prohibited totally. They additionally despised the thought that a northern industrialist could secure plants, or some other business, in the new domains however agrarian Southern slave-proprietors couldnt move into regions where subjugation was restricted in light of the fact that their slaves would then be free. With the race in 1860 of Abraham Lincoln, who ran on a message of containing subjection to where it at present existed, and the accomplishment of the Republican Party to which he had a place ââ¬â the first completely territorial gathering in US history ââ¬â in that decision, South Carolina withdrew on December 20, 1860, the first state to ever formally withdraw from the United States. After four months, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana withdrew too. Later Virginia (aside from its

Business law - Essay Example To do this, the plaintiff should prove the following three things: The message included in the advertisement was defamatory, which means it has a likelihood to injure the reputation of Cornell Ltd. Claiming that Cornell Ltd marketed their software untested is defamatory because the plaintiff will lose business customers. The second element of the advertisement, which is a basis to sue for damages on defamation, is that the advert referred to the plaintiff. The advert was explicit that Cornell Ltd markets untested software, so the defamation refers to the plaintiff. Malice is the final element in the advert that creates a basis to sue for damages on defamation, in the sense that the advert was maliciously aimed at ruining the reputation of Cornell Ltd in the eyes of their customers. This would therefore make Cornell Ltd lose their customers to Stanford. Stanford Company is malicious because they are using false information to win business customers. Negligence is failure to act in a way which a reasonable person would have acted under the same circumstances, or acting in a way which a reasonable person would not have acted (Clarkson, Miller and Jentz 23). Flo can sue Dan under negligence, if she proves that Dan had a legal duty of care, Dan breached the duty of care and as a result, Flo suffered damages. Therefore, law should impose a duty of care imposed for the benefit of a third party, to ensure fairness and justice (Harpwood 31) Flo must show that Dan owed her a legal duty of care. By the fact that Danââ¬â¢s actions or omissions can cause damage on Flo, a duty of care exists. A reasonable person should have set the parking brake, in order to prevent loss to any person who might be affected by the vehicle rolling back. With this argument, Flo can show that Dan owed her a legal duty of care. In addition, another thing that Flo should show is that the duty of care was breached. Dan did not consider

Situational analysis SWOT Analysis The strength of TOMS shoe is that it has a noble cause attached to its marketing initiatives. The fact that one shoe bought will lead to another being donated to African poor is bound to elicit support from the young people who are the target for the designs of shoes to be marketed. The marketing initiative will ensure that customers will spread the goodwill message to others and in turn will create long time loyalty to the brand. One weakness that the brand has is that it is new. Therefore, it will face stiff competition from the already established brands. The brand will also be under immense scrutiny due to the cause that it will further and customers will want to reassurance that what the company preaches to do is what it actually does. This will require additional capital in reassurance of customers. An opportunity presented by this initiative is that it is the first of its kind and therefore may elicit support for the cause in people who always desired to be charitable but could not have had the opportunity to be. Art Music of Caribbean Latin America Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Art Music of Caribbean Latin America - Essay Example Folklore too was used as subject matter for the songs, by musicians like Juan Francisco Garcia, for instance. There were classical influences too, like that of Claude Debussy on Marchenaââ¬â¢s music. Jose Dolores is famous for adding the bells and bass to band music in the army. Jazz was incorporated too, by Luis Alberti, and others. Rafael Ignacio is famous for popularizing dance music. Classical music was very influential in Cuba. Ernesto Lecuona, Amadeo Roldà ¡n and Julian Orbon are again three notable pioneers of this country. Musical forms like the Salsa, had their roots in the Son, which first began in the 1570s. The influx of African slaves as well as the Spanish colonization had lasting impact on the development of music. The Rumba, Danzon, Chachacha and other dance forms became very popular and influential also. In Puerto Rico, Felipe Gutià ©rrez Espinosa was one of the best-known 19th century composers of religious music and operas. Manuel Gregorio Tavarez became the nationââ¬â¢s first Romantic composer, while Juan Morel Campos is known for taking the danza form to its peak. Music in Latin America has progressed more or less similarly; although, comparatively, the Dominican Republic appears to have several more well-known exponents of music. Influence of the Spanish colonization and the immigration of African slaves were responsible for a lot of the music development. This vast and varied repertoire of music was influenced, to a great degree, by the Spanish colonization. The elementary instrument of the guitar itself was introduced by the Spanish, without which a lot of the later musical forms would not have been conceived. The coming of the African slaves too made a profound impact, as they brought their traditional music along with them. The high-pitched nasal quality of singing, for instance, was introduced in this way. The political state too had a role to play.

Examining switching costs as a moderator in the relationship between Essay - 1
Examining switching costs as a moderator in the relationship between service personalization, customer satisfaction and customer - Essay Example The customers may get time saving in searching, locating and evaluating the alternatives services providers. They do not need to waste their time on learning. They do not need to spend their efforts, while switching to other vendors. In commercial view, customer loyalty is the key precondition for achieving success in e-business (Reichheld and Schefter 2000). Loyal customers benefit firm, since they bring additional revenues but require little attention from organizations. Loyal customers are more likely to forgive services handicaps and decreased price sensitivity. Committed customers generate positive work-of-mouth to others, enhance firmsââ¬â¢ resistance to competition, and decrease the costs of selling. As a result, customer loyalty can be treated as a valuable asset. It is also a major source of sustaining continued profitability and organizational growth (Dick and Basu 1994; Anderson and Mittal 2000). The current state of research provides numerous definitions of custome r loyalty. In general level, customer loyalty defines the features and attitudes that consumers exhibit towards products, services, brands, and advertising messages. Customer loyalty signifies customer's willingness to re-buy, repeat patronage behavior over a period of time and a desire to continue and keep a continued relationship with the service providers (Dick and Basu 1994; Oliver 1999). (Anderson and Srinivasan 2003) described customer loyalty as a customerââ¬â¢s favored or chosen provider that leads them to behave positively toward a service provider with repeat patronage behavior. In general, customer loyalty in literature is conceptualized as a form of attitudinal behaviors in marketing and business (Jacoby and Chestnut 1978; Dick and Basu 1994; Oliver 1999; Casalo, Flavian et al. 2008). From an attitudinal perspective, it includes cognitive loyalty and affective loyalty. The customers want sustained relationships with their service providers. From the viewpoint of behavior, cognitive loyalty is a form of repeated patronage that sets the pattern for repeated purchases. Theoretically, whenever customers identify and choose the product or service they like, which meets their quality and price expectations, they are willing to use this product on a long-term basis; as a result, they are no longer concerned with searching for alternatives and become disinterested in competitive and advertising messages and threats. (Oliver 1999). (Oliver 1999) introduced four stage loyalty model; cognitive loyalty is the first stage, which is essentially about the quality of buying behaviors that are affected by customerââ¬â¢s individual characteristics and the circumstances, in which purchase takes place. Customers cannot be loyal to the brand, unless they have information about it. Loyalty develops when customers have sufficient information to decide that the brand is a preferable choice relative to other alternatives. Brand attitudes can be based on pri or knowledge of the brand or brand experiences. Affective loyalty is the second stage, when customers link their knowledge and experiences about the brand to this very brand. Conative loyalty is the third step. This is a very deep commitment by a customer that would like to

Polio Essay Essay Example for Free
Polio Essay Essay In this world, there are over 12,000 diseases caused by either bacteria or viruses, and most of them are yet to be discovered. One of the dreadful diseases revealed is polio (which is shortened for poliomyelitis) (Ballard). The polio virus enters the body through the mouth, multiplies in the throat and intestine, and spreads through the blood to the central nervous system. Thus, the virus attacks the CNS, which can lead to paralysis. The paralysis would start with the legs, and would be visible due to the atrophy, and the muscles wasting away due to the lack of use (Hecht). Many have spent their whole life in iron lungs due to paralysis in the chest muscles (Ballard). There are three types of polio: mild, non paralytic and paralytic (Hecht). Only 1% of all polio patients develop paralytic polio (Hecht). In 1947, as Jonas Salk searched for a vaccination, he came upon the conclusion that a chemical called formaldehyde can eliminate the virus (Ballard). Another scientist named Albert Sabin desired to weaken the virus, instead of killing it (Ballard). Thus, this lead to the invention of oral vaccines that people can swallow (Ballard). A severe disease called post-polio syndrome, which is an illness of the nervous system develops, and can appear 15-50 years after a patient has been affected by polio (Hecht). People and children can contract polio due to a variety of factors, which are present in several third world countries. It still remains to be an underlying health problem in many developing countries (Ballard). The following is a case study about the several societal and political factors that are affecting Pakistans polio eradication program. Pakistan is one of the four countries (along with Nigeria, India, and Afghanistan) in which polio has remained endemic since the World Health Assembly in 1988 (Katz). In the early 1990s, almost 20 000 cases of polio were reported, although, the numbers have been fluctuating up and down ever since (Katz). Firstly, immense floods in the summer of 2010 have ravaged the Swat Valley in Pakistan resulting in the displacement of millions of people, the absence of running water and electricity, and the closure of at least 500 health clinics and facilities (Katz). Secondly, the weaknesses in the delivery of services and issues of poor health systems governance are a major factor inà the failure to achieve eradication (Nishtar). Lastly, the absence of polio vaccines from non-health sectors such as war and conflict zones and the refusal of parents to vaccinate their children have increased the number of polio cases in the country (Nishtar). The challenges and threats Pakistan faces in the eradication of Polio jeopardizes the world wide efforts, and as long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio (Nishtar). In general, the polio virus is highly contagious and each and every country that is still under the threats of polio must be careful and responsible enough to see the warning signs before it is too late. Polio usually develops as the result of contact with either polluted water or the mosquitoes that breed in such water. (Bano et al.) Also, the improper sanitization and lack of clean water and electricity promotes the growth of deadly viruses and bacteria (Bano et al.). The only remaining solution for Pakistan is to develop a plan for National immunizat ion days, where the entire government must educate every one of its citizens to vaccinate their children and reduce the risk of contracting polio (Nishtar). After so many dreadful years, India and Nigeria have shown promise of possibly attaining eradication in the next several years (Kelland). Other countries have diligently strived to eradicate polio by spending over $6 million dollars on vaccination campaigns (Draper). Comparable to the Pakistan case study stated above, there are many issues that contribute to polios existence in developing countries. There is an increased rate of international travel which contributes to the spread of polio (Hecht). If the world wants to eradicate polio permanently, we must try to contain the virus, involving all the countries laboratories, identifying and destroying the source of polio viruses and establishing a post eradication immunization policy with W.H.O (World Health Organization) (Hecht). Each developing country also has to determine the diverse economic, cultural, social and geographical factors responsible for the persistence of polio (Bano et al.). Other reasons of polio still being wide spread are due to the low levels of literacy (causing the community to be unaware of vaccines), people following an unhygienic life, laborers who do not properly wash their hands before eating and improper drainage systems (Bano et al.). Additionally, a largeà number of children are malnourished and extremely poor and health workers impose costs for vaccination services that are meant to be provided for free (Nishtar). Despite almost a billion dollars being donated for campaigns encouraging polio eradication, due to a shortfall of funds and lack of transparency in governance (Nishtar), there is much delay in interrupting the poliovirus transmission in third world countries (Kelland). According to Donaldson, who is the Chairman of the National Patient Safety Agency in UK, These are the children that the world forgot, growing up with no protection from polio at a time when most of the worlds parents have long forgotten what polio even is. He also mentioned that, If the funding gap isnt bridged, future generations will surely look back and wonder how this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to destroy polioâ⬠¦was allowed to slip through our fingers. (Kelland) In conclusion, polio used to be an endemic before the 20th century and is still a major dilemma in third world countries today. We should be obliged to take action for this crisis and eradicate polio once and for all. Factors promoting the spread of polio, including poor sanitation, inadequate amount of clean supplies and low levels of literacy, require attention and should be solved with the assistance of money, dedicated health care workers and the government. Education, experimentation and discoveries which grow out of them are the best tools to protect the health of others (Hecht). All in all, the lesson to be learned is that the fight against infectious diseases will never come to an end and we must continue to strive on to at least reduce the risk of those in our society obtaining these diseases or illnesses. How the Characters React Towards the Shooting of Candys Og Essay Example for Free
How the Characters React Towards the Shooting of Candys Og Essay The way the characters react towards the shooting of Candyââ¬â¢s dog reveals a lot abut the characters that we might not have expected. Carlson offers to shoot the old dog, complaining many times of the smell. The shooting of Candys dog shows the callousness of Carlson and the reality of old age and infirmity. Carlson typifies the men George describes as ââ¬Å"the loneliest guys in the worldâ⬠. He is outwardly friendly, but essentially selfish. He finds the smell of an old dog offensive so the dog must be shot. He shows very little regard to the dogââ¬â¢s owner, Candy. He relentlessly pursues the dogââ¬â¢s death, more for his own comfort than to put the dog out of its misery. However, Steinbeck does show some sympathy in Carlson, when he suggests ââ¬Å"he wonââ¬â¢t even feel itâ⬠, referring to Candyââ¬â¢s dogs death. This is contrasted to Candyââ¬â¢s procrastination to put this event off when he says ââ¬Å"maybe tomorra, Leââ¬â¢s wait till tomorraâ⬠Steinbeck displays that Candy is trying to delay the put down of his dog and his reluctance to end his dogs life shows how much he loves the animal. ââ¬Å"Carlson had refused to be drawn inâ⬠this suggest that Carlson is determined and not to be put off. When Carlson brutally keeps after candy, candyââ¬â¢s reaction is described in the adverbs Steinbeck has used: ââ¬Å"uneasily,â⬠ââ¬Å"hopefully,â⬠ââ¬Å"hopelessly,â⬠and the way candy reacts: ââ¬Å"Candy looked for help from face to face.â⬠When he reaches out to Slim for help, even Slim says it would be better to put the dog down. Slim is portrayed as serene and a good listener/observer in this novel, and when Steinbeck suggests ââ¬Å"the skinner had been studying the old dog with his calm eyesâ⬠ââ¬â referring to Slim, it suggests that he had been very thoughtful about the whole incident and even showed his understanding and considerateness when he reminded Carlson to take a shovel, so Candy will be spared the glimpse of the corpse. ââ¬Å"I wisht somebodyââ¬â¢d shoot me if I get anââ¬â¢ a crippleâ⬠are the words Slim uses that Candy later echoes when he considers his own future. This perceptibly puts Candy in deep thought, it shows Candyââ¬â¢s realisation of his own mortality when Slim states this. The dog, in this case tells us something of the owner. When Steinbeck shows the dog nearing the end of its days it could show that candy was too. Also Steinbeck employs irony by saying that he wanted someone to ââ¬Ëshootââ¬â¢ him when he got ââ¬Ëoldââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëcrippledââ¬â¢ which he almost is. Slim also reassures Candy when he says ââ¬Å"you can have a pup if you want toâ⬠. When Candy finally gives in and allows Carlson to shoot his dog, it shows the reader that candy wants to be over and done with and wants his dog a swift and painless death. There is some empathy shown when Carlson says ââ¬Å"come on boyâ⬠to soften the blow for the dog and more so Candy. Once Carlson has taken the dog to shoot, Steinbeck builds the tension within the characters just before the dog is killed. ââ¬Å"George followed to the door and shut the doorâ⬠ââ¬â this proposes Georgeââ¬â¢s kind nature and sympathy towards Candy and his dog- this could be one reason as to why George did not give an opinion on whether Candyââ¬â¢s dog should be shot. When George offers ââ¬Å"anybody like to play a little euchreâ⬠it is evidently shown that George is trying to change the topic and he doesnââ¬â¢t want to worry Candy about the dog, this makes the reader see George taking peopleââ¬â¢s emotions into account before his own, we also saw this earlier in the book when George stands up for Lennie. We see this again when George ââ¬Å"ripple the edge of the deck nervouslyâ⬠this shows that he is also concerned about the whole situation. It is evident that whit also showed concern indirectly when he says ââ¬Å"what the hell is taking him so longâ⬠. When Steinbeck repeats ââ¬Å"a minute passed, and another minuteâ⬠he purposely extends the sentence which is a reflection as it prolongs the moment. And then when Steinbeck says ââ¬Å"the silence came into the room. And the silence lasted.â⬠Steinbeck employs short length sentences which make the moment seem longer and intensify the significance of that specific time. After ââ¬Å"the shot sound in the distanceâ⬠we are told that Candy ââ¬Å"slowly rolled over and faced the wall and lay silentâ⬠, this reaction suggests that candy tried to bravely take in what just happened by turning his back to it and attempting to keep unruffled. The use of short sentence shows us that initially after the shot, there were no comments by anyone which implied that it left them in shock and the realisation of what just happened was slowly sinking in everyoneââ¬â¢s head. Steinbeckââ¬â¢s employment of repetition of conjunctions with ââ¬Ëandââ¬â¢ lengthens the sentence at the end, expanding the climax of the scene, as the audience wants to know what happened to Candy, after his most beloved companion has gone. Carlson even cleans his gun in front of Candy after the deed is done, this reinforces his brutal character. While it may be true that killing the dog put it out of its misery, little concern is shown for Candys feelings after a lifetime of caring for the dog. Now Candy is like the rest of them ââ¬â alone.
